Mark Bovens

Mark Bovens is Professor of Public Administration at the Utrecht School of Governance and member (0.6) of the Dutch Scientific Council for Government Policy (WRR), the strategic thinktank of the Dutch cabinet in The Hague (The Netherlands).

Present projects of Mark Bovens include public accountability and governance; migration diversity; educational inequalities in democratic citizenship and civil society. The latter were the theme of his most recent book Diploma Democracy: The Rise of Political Meritocracy (with Anchrit Wille, OUP 2017).

It seems that democracy has lost its efficiency and legitimacy. This feeling contrasts sharply with the expectations of 1991 at the end of the Cold War. In the social sciences, democratization processes were a rapidly growing field of expertise. Twenty-five years later, the situation has been reversed.
