Michael Delli Carpini

Michael Delli Carpini is Professor of Communication at the University of Pennsylvania’s Annenberg School for Communication, serving as Dean from 2003 to 2018.

Delli Carpini's research explores the role of the citizen in democratic politics, with particular emphasis on the impact of mass media and information and communications technologies on public opinion, public deliberation, political knowledge, and political participation.

It seems that democracy has lost its efficiency and legitimacy. This feeling contrasts sharply with the expectations of 1991 at the end of the Cold War. In the social sciences, democratization processes were a rapidly growing field of expertise. Twenty-five years later, the situation has been reversed.

A healthy public debate about important societal challenges requires a common and scientifically sound basis.
