She is the recipient of the Australian Research Council's Discovery Early Career Research Award Fellowship for her work on democratic innovations in post-disaster contexts.

Curato specialises in ethnographic research among communities experiencing depravity and dispossession and has published extensively in sociology, politics and policy journals.
