Ylva Biri is a PhD candidate in the Doctoral Programme of Language Studies at the University of Helsinki, where she also received her MA in English philology. Her employment at the university is funded by the University of Helsinki Research Foundation. Biri’s main areas of research interests are corpus linguistics, pragmatics and sociolinguistics, especially in internet communication. Her independent PhD research project combines quantitative corpus-linguistic methods and qualitative discourse analysis to investigate how users express their opinion and personal evaluation in social media communities on different platforms. Biri is a qualified teacher of English as a Foreign Language and has non-academic work experience in teaching and localisation.
For complex challenges an interdisciplinary synthesis can be more important and more relevant than technical and disciplinary expertise. Global problems require an international synthesis.
