Text - The future of the university
In December 2025 LIAS welcomed several international fellows for the project The future of the university – 600 years of KU Leuven.
They reflected on three themes, namely:
- Revisiting universities’ contribution to economic growth
- Academic freedom and activism
- What makes university education special
The visiting fellows all provided short texts capturing their aspirations for the future of a comprehensive university like KU Leuven. This collection reveals what they wish for Leuven in both the near and more distant future.

For complex challenges an interdisciplinary synthesis can be more important and more relevant than technical and disciplinary expertise. Global problems require an international synthesis.
