Rose Gilroy (BA MA FHEA FCIH FRSA FAcSS) is Professor of Ageing, Planning and Policy in the School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape, Newcastle University. Director of Future Homes Alliance CIC.

Professor Gilroys work explores how home, and neighbourhood support quality of life in later life. As an academic situated in Planning, she is interested in the transactional relationship between people and their place that embraces how people individually and collectively may influence their environments. Her work frequently uses an everyday life framework to explore strategies for survival or flourishing. Rose Gilroy has considerable research experience in qualitative and participatory methods: interviews, focus groups, photo elicitation and visioning. She is committed to change and much of my work is action oriented, and she has founded the Future Homes Alliance Community Interest Company.

With age, the health and social needs of older adults become more complex. Multimorbidity, the coexistence of two or more chronic diseases, occurs in more than half of adults over 65 years of age. At the same time, there is less availability of informal caregivers due to a narrower base in the population pyramid, the increasing number of women who have started working and the greater geographical distance between parent(s) and child(ren). The demand for health services and other forms of support (cleaning help, hot meals, etc.) is therefore increasing.

For complex challenges an interdisciplinary synthesis can be more important and more relevant than technical and disciplinary expertise. Global problems require an international synthesis.
