Water: scarcity and flooding

Climate change increases the likelihood of hydrological extremes, with both more prolonged droughts and intense rainfall. Flanders is very vulnerable to this climate evolution because of its high population density, high water consumption, high degree of urbanization and strong drainage. We need to adapt our water management to better arm ourselves against the risks. The past few summers have made the sense of urgency in this area clear.

This project focuses on the interdisciplinary aspects of water management, drawing on the interdisciplinary expertise present at KU Leuven. Together with the international fellows, we look at, among other things, the link with spatial planning and planning/design of the built environment, energy management, food supply, the economic aspects, the importance of good communication to the citizen and the various sectors, taking into account behavioural psychology, and the linking opportunities in terms of strengthening biodiversity and making our living environment more attractive.
